After a relaxing and fun filled spring vacation, we came back to school last Wednesday and began to explore eggs and the cycle of the chicken. Mrs. Mull (Kali's mom) came to our classroom to teach us about many of the different animals that hatch from eggs. We looked at chicken eggs up close and we even got to meet a real hen this week, named Red. After learning about Red the Hen by observing, touching and asking questions, we wrote about hens and even wrote Red's owner a thank you card for bringing Red to 91 for a visit. Today, we finished up our look at eggs, chicks and chickens. On Thursday and Friday, we will write stories and have some fun learning about elephants.
Next week, we will be having a school wide spirit week to help us get excited about our upcoming 91 carnival. Monday - dress as a twin day, Tuesday - kindergarten dresses in pink (optional), Wednesday - Crazy day, Thursday - Nerd Day and Friday - Super Hero day.
Our class is responsible to put together a raffle basket for the carnival. Our theme is: gardening. So far, we only have 3 things for our basket. Please send in your donation by Monday, April 16th so that we can put together a GREAT basket. (Even if every family sent in one small item we could put together a fun basket!) The money from this carnival and raffle basket comes right back to our classroom to fund field trips and classroom activities. We are scheduled to go to the Enchanted Forest on Thursday, June 7th. Mark your calendars and plan to join us.

This has been a fun and busy week as we have learned about the letter Yy both at the beginning of words and with the (e) sound at the end of words. We have written about things that are yucky, yummy and yellow. Yesterday, we learned about and reported on the cycle of our daffodils as we painted pictures and made paper daffodils for our science board.
Today, we celebrated our 100th day of kindergarten by creating 100 as we counted by 5's, 10's, and 1's with a variety of art and math projects as well as a delicious snack with 100 items!
Tomorrow, we will dress as our favorite book characters as we celebrate the end of our reading month with a fun school assembly and a celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday.
Please check your child's homework folder for a note confirming your parent/teacher conference time coming up in March. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you need to change your time, please contact me at school.
A BIG THANK YOU to all parents and grandparents who have contributed so much to our classroom with donations of time and supplies. We really appreciate all that you do for our kindergarten!!
This week we have been exploring the world of whales, windsocks and worms. February is also a great time to learn about presidents! Today, after reading the story, Mrs. Wishy-Washy, we will work on sequence of stories as well as characters and setting. In nature, we are noticing the wind as we create our own windsocks and we are celebrating that our very first daffodil has bloomed!
In math, we continue to work on counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's to prepare for our 100th day of school on Thursday, March 1. Please come and join us in the fun. Remember, I would like each child to bring in a small collection of 100 items from home so we can see how many ways 100 can look.
I am also beginning to do assessments on each child in every academic area: math, reading, writing,
spelling, listening and speaking so that I will have that information to share with you during conferences as well as on the report card coming up in March. I am so happy to see all the great progress that your children are making in every area of kindergarten!
Please take time to fill out your conference form and return it to school by Friday so that I can put together a schedule. I will send home a date and time for your conference as soon as I receive back all the forms.

This week, we have been working on the letter Hh and continuing our work on segmenting, blending and decoding simple words. We also had a wonderful Valentine's Day filled with fun and good friends. We spent the day counting, sorting, graphing and doing addition with hearts.
Our 100th day of school is coming up on Thursday, March 1 so we are practicing every day to count to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. Please continue to work with your child at home on this important skill of counting to 100. Mark your calendars and plan to share this fun day with your child in our classroom. We will being having a special 100 days snack that day so your child will not need to bring a snack. But I am in need of some snack items for that day. If you would be willing to donate any of the following, please let me know: 2 cans of peanuts, 1 box Chex cereal, bag of raisins, of a bag of chocolate chips.
Remember, we are reading together as a school to accumulate those important reading minutes. Please continue to spend time reading at home with your child and record the time spent on your sheet. We will end our reading month with a special celebration on Friday, March 2. Everyone is encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character on that day.

This week, we are exploring letter Ll while reading and writing about lizards, ladybugs, Legos and lions. Kali Mull's dad started our week by sharing his lizards with us. We are also working hard on segmenting, blending and decoding new words with the short vowel sounds of a, i and o.
During math, we continue to work on numbers 0-20, while we also practice counting to 100 by 1's, 5's and 10's. These are very important skills for your kindergarten child, so please practice at home as often as you can.
We are in the process of making our valentine mailboxes. I still have many students who have not brought in a shoe box. We are planning on decorating and finishing our boxes on Thursday, so please let me know if you need me to find a shoe box for your child.
All parents are invited to attend our Valentine's Day. We will be working on related math and reading projects all morning, so feel free to join us at any time.
Our whole school is participating in a reading month where we each spend time reading and then record our minutes to add to the school total. Please encourage your child to spend time reading with you at home.

We have had a great time during Kk week, starting our day building words and designs with K'nex.
During literacy time, we read and wrote about kangaroos and Kindergarten Kids. To learn the sight word, where - we wrote some question and answer books. Tomorrow we will work on the -ing sound by reading and writing words that rhyme with king.
In math this week, we continue to work on recognizing and building the numbers 10-20 with tens and ones. Please work with your child at home on this skill so that they can easily recognize and build these numbers both in order and randomly displayed. We also enjoyed estimating and eating chocolate kisses as we practiced addition facts.
After our week of floods and freezing weather, it was a hint of spring when we checked our daffodil tub and noticed our stems are growing and even a brave little bud has appeared.
Please remember to save those shoe boxes and send one to school with your child in the next weeks so that we can make and decorate valentine mailboxes. Plan to attend our special valentine's day on Feb. 14th. If you would be willing to donate $10.00 toward the cost of cookies or you would be willing to send juice or cups, please let me know.
Thanks for all your help and support. We are having a wonderful year in kindergarten.

This week, we enjoyed reading and writing about bears, bees, and beans. On Wednesday, we had fun acting out Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Later, we wrote our own books describing our favorite characters and parts of the story. We also enjoyed chanting and singing, Down by the Bay as we reviewed rhyming words.
In math, we worked with beans to complete simple addition facts and to practice estimating and counting by tens and ones. Please continue to practice counting aloud to 100 with your child as well as working to recognize and name the numbers from 0-20.
I will be sending home the February calendar soon so please email me with dates if you would like to parent help next month. Also, remember that each child will need a shoebox in February to decorate as a Valentine mailbox.

To celebrate Ff week, Kortney and her mom brought frogs to our classroom for the week. We have had fun reading, writing and learning about frogs. Isabel and her mom also brought a fish so that we could learn facts about fish and compare fish to frogs. This week, we have been focusing on identifying books that tell us facts and books that are fiction. Today or tomorrow, we will take a "chilly" trip outside to check on nature around us so we can record our findings in our monthly science journal. Be sure to ask you child what is happening with our daffodil bulbs!
This Friday, we will have a special opportunity to attend a school assembly where we get to explore science and nature through music, art and storytelling. This event is funded and brought to us by our PTA. A special thanks to them for providing this great event for us!
As we begin to think about all the special holidays coming up next month, please save a shoebox for your child (child size or adult size, please No Boot Boxes). In February, each child will be creating a special Valentine mailbox. Please let me know if you do not have a shoebox and I will bring in some extra. I will be sending home a class list in a week so that you can start working on class valentine cards, if your child is interested. We will not be passing these out until Feb. 14 when we have our party, so please wait until then to send them to school. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend our special Valentine's day in the kindergarten on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
We will be welcoming a new student, Evik Houston to our class this week!
As we returned to school after a long and restful break, we enjoyed dreaming about a winter filled with snow! We learned chants and poems about snowmen. We read The Snowy Day and spent the morning creating torn paper pictures and text to tell the story of our own adventures in the snow. After learning to cut paper snowflakes, we decorated our classroom tree with our favorite flakes and hung our handmade snowmen; turning our classroom into a winter wonderland. On Friday, we will read a story about Snowmen at Night to inspire our own books describing what snowmen really do after we go to sleep.
In math, we have reviewed counting and ordering numbers, naming and describing 2D shapes, and now we will begin our study of place value - putting tens and ones together to form the numbers 11-20. We will also be working on counting aloud to 100 and learning to recognize and name 3D shapes.
I will be sending home the first trimester report cards with your child's homework folder on Friday. Please check for these in your chid's backpack. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's report card, please feel free to contact me at school.
A special thank you to all parents and families who donated time and supplies for our gingerbread houses. We had a wonderful day!
Happy holidays! We will see you again in the New Year. School resumes on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012.
