K-1 Writing
Young writers use what they know about letters and sounds in their writing. They use inventive spelling or spell words the way they sound. Sun may be spelled sn for example. In our classroom we have a word wall that students can use to spell basic sight words. Although you may have a hard time reading some of your child’s writing , he or she should be able to read it to you. In class we are working on making books. Please encourage your child to read these books to you. Don’t worry about correct spelling at this time. A good way to help your child with writing is to show your child how you write. Write grocery lists with your child, by saying the items aloud and then writing them down.Perhaps your child can help with the first letter of each word. Please stop by and see our beautiful pumpkin paintings and super sentences outside room 1.

Conferences are this week.
Our first ELL Parent Night will be next Wednesday from 6-7 pm. Students at work!

Welcome!
This is my fourth year teaching at Ninety- One School. I am excited to return to this great learning community. This year I will be teaching English Language Development and Sheltered Literacy. I will be working with kindergarten, first and fifth grade students. I will also be working with small reading groups. I look forward to sharing my love of learning with your child.
The goal of the English Language Development class is to increase vocabulary, writing, and comprehension in English. Each spring, students take the Oregon State Assessment ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment) and are expected to progress in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The ELD class provides small group, focused instruction to help students further their English language skills.
Expectations: Students are expected to come to class ready to do their best. Students need to respect their classmates, their teachers, and their classroom.
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to visit my classroom.

¡Bienvenidos!

meyerm@canby.k12.or.us We have just completed a unit in which we learned about homes Native Americans built many years ago. We wrote about five different types of homes using past tense verbs. We also built our own plank houses.

Working through the writing process ( prewriting, drafting, revising editing and publishing) we have written our own Bear books. We recently shared our stories with the kindergarten class.

We are researching the types of homes and the materials that were used in building these homes in various regions of the United States. Our grammar focus is on past tense verbs. Kindergarten
We have been reading fairy tales in class these past few weeks. One of our favorites is the story of The Three Little Pigs. We have been acting it out in class. Please ask us to tell you this story!
