Native American Bulletin BoardsMy reading group is studying Native American culture across the North America. Students were broke into groups of 4 and assigned a region to research. The assignment has three parts: a bulletin board displaying their culture, a Keynote presentation to teach the class, and a reflective writing comparing/contrasting and evaluating our Native American history. Here are a few photos of the bulletin boards that are in progress.

IXL at HomeNow more than ever I need your help and support at home. Students are facing very challenging math standards and next year the Smarter Balanced testing system will be our new state assessment given only once per year.

In order to set our students up for success we must work together. You can help at home by encouraging your child to use IXL for math skill practice. IXL is a computer based program that is aligned with our Common Core State Standards. Students can use it to reinforce skills or challenge themselves.

Student usernames and passwords were stapled into their planners at the beginning of the year. Click here to get to the website:

Book Ordering Online With ScholasticI wanted to make sure you knew that our classroom has an online code for ordering from Scholastic. Sometimes it's easier to do it at home and not have to bother with sending in a check and order form. So, I'm attaching a link directly to the Scholastic ordering site for my class. Our online code is GR2WD. Every time you order online, our classroom library receives a free book. So, everyone comes out ahead and become better readers. Thanks so much!

Holiday Open HouseIt was so nice to see my students with their parents and grandparents last night. The school was packed and the atmosphere was wonderful. I took a video of my class performing their play, "Twas the Week Before Christmas" as they performed today for Mrs. Smidt's class. Hope you enjoy watching them and can hear the funny story.

Math Standards and IXL PracticeOur math unit is centered around multiplication. In addition to memorizing our facts, we are also learning about the different models for multiplication and the properties. IXL is an excellent place for your student to practice these skills at home. I shared your child's username and password with you at conferences, but they also have it stapled inside their planner. I'm posting the standards we are focusing on right now, as well as the link to the IXL practice page. Please encourage your student to spend time on IXL at home in order to support our learning at school.

      • Practice Organization In Writing Online
I've found a fun site that helps students with writing. Our class is working on the trait of Organization. This involves telling your story in sequential order using a beginning, middle and end. It also includes using transitional words like first, next, then and finally. Click on the following link to practice putting a story in order. Sequence of Events

      • Stauffer Farms Movie Made By Students
When we went on our field trip, students used video cameras and digital cameras to document our trip. Ms. Kent, the district technology teacher, came along to help. Then she came to school for 3 days to help the students create a movie from their trip. It turned out amazing and really shows how much the kids learned. Click the following to see the movie. • ESD Practice Writing Assessment This Week
Starting on Monday, my homeroom will be starting a 3-4 day writing assessment. The kids will have 3 choices to write about, and will go through the writing process to complete a piece to the best of their ability at this time. It will be scored by trained teachers throughout the county and returned to our school. It will give us some good data as to where your child is in relation to writing, and how far we need get by the February State 4th Grade Writing Assessment. In order to pass, they need to have a "4" in Ideas/Content, Organization, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. You can refer to the scoring guides I sent home on index with your child. Please remember to remind them to EDIT any and all work they do to "Get in the Habit"!

Miss Jackson will begin her 5 week student teaching experience tomorrow. With my guidance she will plan for all subjects, handle all classroom issues and practice being a teacher. I will be in the building at all times and will check in at lunch time to see how things are going. I'm fully confident she will do an amazing job with our kiddos.

      • SMART Goals
Each week our fourth grade team meets to work on a SMART goal for the classroom. In the past we've focused on writing goals, which are rich in data for the teacher, but take longer to score and analyze. Our most recent SMART goal is focused on multiplication fluency. We are working toward quick recall of facts because it is essential for application with higher math concepts. Our class has only been working on passing one fact family at a time. With the new SMART goal, the focus will now be to learn all of the facts together. It will be interesting to see if this increases their fluency. Please practice at home nightly and remember that multiplication facts are an essential skill for fourth graders and for the rest of their lives. Here's an excellent site to print out practice pages for use at home. Multiplication Fact Practice Pages
